Terms of use and licence
Vobuda costs nothing and always will. This page says what that gives you, what it does not, and what happens if something goes wrong. It is written to be read rather than survived.
The short version
Four sentences that cover almost everybody.
You may use Vobuda for anything you do, at work or at home, for free, on as many of your own machines as you like, without an account and without telling us. You may not hand the program on: no redistributing a copy, no selling it, no offering it as a service, no taking it apart.
It is given to you as it is, with no promise that it will suit your purpose, and Shifton Inc is not liable for what happens on your machine. If someone else wants Vobuda, send them to vobuda.com, because it is free for them too.
Everything below is the same thing said carefully. If you need something this licence does not give you, write to [email protected] and ask. The answer is often yes.
What you may do
Use it for anything, commercial included
Personal projects, a job, a company of any size, a client's work. There is no seat count, no licence key, no registration and no distinction between a hobby and a business.
Install it on your own machines
As many as you personally use. There is no licence check. The program does ask vobuda.com once a day whether there is a new version, and the site counts those requests without a name or an address, as the privacy page says.
Configure it however you like
The settings folder is yours. Write themes, window looks, monitor skins, dock buttons, agent descriptions and shortcut sets, keep them in git, publish them, sell them if you want to. Configuration files you write are your work, not ours.
Automate it
Drive it from scripts and from agents through its command line. Build tooling around it and share that tooling.
Study what it does to your machine
Watch it, profile it, inspect its network traffic, read its log. Nothing about how it behaves is hidden from you, and we would rather you checked than trusted.
Tell people about it
Write about it, record it, screenshot it, recommend it. Use the name and the mark to refer to the program. What you may not do is put the name on something that is not it.
What you may not do
One rule under all of these: the program is handed out by us, and only by us.
Hand the program on
Do not distribute a copy, mirror the download, bundle it inside another product, or put it in a package repository. Point people at vobuda.com instead. This is how we know that every copy anybody runs is the signed one we built.
Sell it or charge for access to it
Not as a product, not as part of a bundle, not as a paid service, not on a machine somebody rents from you.
Take it apart
No reverse engineering, decompiling or disassembling the build, and no modifying, patching or repackaging it. The source is not published, and this is the line that keeps it that way.
Use the name for something else
Do not use Vobuda, the mark, or a name close enough to be confused with either, for your own product, service or distribution.
Remove what the interface says about us
The parts of the program that name Shifton Inc and its other products stay in.
Use it to break the law
It is a terminal. What you run in it is yours, and so is the responsibility for it.
What is not promised
Vobuda is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not promise that it is free of defects, that it will suit what you need it for, that it will keep working after an update to macOS, or that it will keep being published at all.
To the fullest extent the law allows, Shifton Inc is not liable for any damage arising from using or being unable to use the program: lost work, lost time, lost data, lost profit, or anything else, whether or not we were told such damage was possible. Some places do not allow a limitation like this, in which case it applies as far as it can and no further.
Written plainly: back up your work, the way you would with any program that has your shell inside it. The program refuses to overwrite a file that changed under it and asks before closing something that is running, and neither of those is a promise about your data.
Other people's code, and your agents
Vobuda is built on open source libraries given away by other people under their own terms. The full list with every licence text ships inside the program, under What Vobuda is built on in its own menu. Those licences govern those parts, not this one.
Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and any local model you run are somebody else's programs under somebody else's terms, and your subscription or key with them is yours. Vobuda hosts them in a block and reads the files they keep on your own disk. It does not proxy them. The one use it makes of your account with them is to ask Anthropic for your Claude limits with the sign-in Claude Code keeps, as the privacy page describes. It takes no responsibility for what they do.
Changes, ending, and where this is decided
We may change this licence for future versions. A change does not reach backwards: the version you already installed keeps the terms it was given to you under. The current text always lives at this address, and the date at the bottom of this page is when it last moved.
Your permission to use the program ends if you break the terms above. You can end it yourself at any time by deleting the application; your settings folder is yours and stays until you remove it.
This licence is governed by the laws applicable to Shifton Inc, and if any part of it turns out to be unenforceable, the rest of it stands.
Questions about any of this go to [email protected].
