Vobuda and Alacritty, side by side

Alacritty is the most honest program in this comparison: it says what it will not do and then does not do it. Vobuda makes the opposite bet, and both bets are defensible.

What Alacritty is good at

Alacritty is small, extremely fast, cross-platform and configured by one TOML file. It has no tabs and no splits on purpose, because its position is that your window manager or a multiplexer should do that, and a terminal should render text as fast as possible and get out of the way. That is a coherent position and it has been held consistently for years.

Paired with tmux, Alacritty is a setup a lot of very good engineers have used happily for a decade, and nothing on this page is an argument that they are wrong.

Where the two differ

The Vobuda window: a tab strip with the Integration button, a terminal block that has just run git log and a passing test run, a Claude Code block with its control bar explaining the rate limiter, and the dock with Plugins along the right edge The Vobuda window: a tab strip with the Integration button, a terminal block that has just run git log and a passing test run, a Claude Code block with its control bar explaining the rate limiter, and the dock with Plugins along the right edge
A terminal and a Claude Code block in one window, with the agent's control bar and the dock beside them.
  • Opposite premises

Alacritty says a terminal should render text and nothing else. Vobuda says a window that knows how to hold a block should hold any block: a terminal, a file being edited, the files panel, a web page, a picture, a PDF, a diff, the monitor, the settings, an add-on. Neither of those is a mistake; they are answers to different questions.

  • If you use tmux, you already have half of this

Panes, tabs and persistent sessions come from tmux in that setup. What tmux cannot give you is a control bar reading a running agent's own model, effort, permission mode, sessions and skills, because tmux sees text and nothing else.

  • Configuration

One TOML file against a folder of JSON. Both are yours, both are diffable, both survive a reinstall. Vobuda's is hot-reloaded and also editable through a settings screen that writes the same files.

  • Speed

Alacritty will win a throughput benchmark. Vobuda draws its text with xterm.js, with GPU rendering as an option, and is fast in normal use, but it is carrying a monitor, an editor and an agent bar, and pretending that is free would be dishonest.

Where your configuration lives

The shortest honest answer to this comparison. Both samples set the same four things: typeface, size, colours, transparency.

~/.config/alacritty/alacritty.toml
[font]normal = { family = "JetBrains Mono" }size = 13.0 [window]opacity = 0.96
Small, strict and fast, and it stays that way on purpose: no tabs, no splits, nothing that is not the terminal.
~/.config/vobuda/settings.json
{ "theme": "tokyo-night", "term": { "font": "JetBrains Mono", "fontSize": 13 }, "window": { "opacity": 0.96, "quakeKey": "cmd+`" }} # themes/, keys.json and skins/ sit beside it in the same# folder. Nothing about you is written anywhere else.
One folder, four small files, all of them yours. No account is attached to any of it.

Alacritty and vobuda, asked plainly

Is Alacritty faster?

At raw rendering throughput, almost certainly. It is built for that and carries nothing else.

Can I use tmux inside Vobuda?

Yes, it is a terminal and tmux is a program. Vobuda has no special tmux integration.

Why would I move from Alacritty and tmux?

Only for the agent part. If your day is mostly running an agent across several projects, the state that tmux cannot see is the thing Vobuda puts on the screen.

Ten minutes is a better comparison than this page

It installs in one line, opens with a single terminal block and takes nothing from you.
